A return to blogging

Well, there have been many reasons for the lack of blogging, the most important one being that Chris and I are expecting a baby next fall. We were hoping to be able to tell a lot of people individually before broadcasting it on the blog but it is hard with the time difference and our work schedules. Chris was away from Dubai for almost a month between his project in Saudi and a trip to Barcelona. There was little time for phone calls so we are sorry if you didn't get an announcement straight from the source before now. I am nearing the end of the first trimester and hoping that any day now will be the day I wake up and don't feel sick all day long. I have been fighting this dreadful all day sickness with every tactic I could think of: yoga, meditation, optimism, healthy food, lots of rest but at the end of the day I just had to accept that this is just how I feel right now! Everyone says it passes before you know it and you forget all about it so I am trusting that. For now I am still scarred by some very embarrassing public puking episodes, they really dredge up awful elementary school memories. The worst thing about being an adult and spontaneously puking is that people think you're drunk especially when you are at a hotel in Dubai that serves alcohol. Oh well! I have started my new job and have to get back to work asap. I am a production assistant for a news correspondent here from the US and I love the job but right now it is exhausting because it is all new and it is a lot of work. Chris is back in Dubai for a while on a project here which is nice. The weather is perfect right now, late Spring/early Summer weather and the beach is nice!
In other news I did go to Spain to meet Chris for a few days and I will be posting some pictures and stories as soon as I get a break from work.

Still here!

Wow, I have been awful about blogging (an internet cable was cut here so access has been annoying) so here is an update:

1) Hugo had to be relocated to a better home. He was not meshing with apartment life so I found him a family out in Hatta with a big house and yard. Hopefully he is happier, we were sad but really it was for the best, he was destroying our apartment.

2) I have been in two car accidents in the past three weeks. I have never been in a car accident before besides a crack dealer rear ending me once on the west side of Chicago but it was very minor. The first one was my fault but I gave up coffee and I am sticking to that defense for the accident. The second accident was NOT my fault. A taxi driver took a wide corner came into my lane and hit me. He tried to blame it on me at the police station but luckily Chris had taken pictures with his cell phone. So, I have seen more red tape than I ever wanted to out of these incidents. I am now dealing with the insurance claims which are a nightmare. The police are very nice here though. Funny though- I have only talked to a police officer one other time in my life- in Virginia I got pulled over by a cop that looked about 18 because I was going five miles over the speed limit on my way to TN to move in with Chris. He just gave me a friendly warning and went on his way. Now here I am in a foreign country dealing with cops left and right.

3) I got caught up in a important convoy today coming home from work. I think it must have been the Sheikh, I tried to look at him when they passed me but all the cars surrounding him made it difficult.

4) I think I am taking a new job working as an assistant to a news correspondent from the US here. It sounds exciting!

5) Chris and I are meeting in Spain later this week for a few days. I haven't been since 1997 when I was a poor university student. I had two outfits in a backpack, a couple hundred dollars and a rough guide to Europe and it lasted me 5 weeks. Not much splurging happened so I am looking forward to seeing the inside of restaurants this time vs. only bars.

I think that about concludes my updates but I will be faithful yet again to the blog...I promise!

Sorry for the lack of blogging

The blog was stuck in Arabic for the past couple of weeks which is why there have not been any new posts for a while and now I am still having trouble posting and still have no spell check (which of course I shouldn't need but I have become oh so dependent on that safety net) so pardon the technical difficulties...regular service will resume.

Hugo

Hugo came into our lives last week through a series of coincidences. He was the victim of a Dubai divorce and was left homeless by his broken home. He found his way into our home (and hearts) way of a few foster home. He is criminally cute, horribly naughty and his hobbies include chewing things, finding things to mess with and occasionally undoing all of his potty training (although we have come a LONG way in that area). He seems happy in his new home and this is a photo of him on his new favorite spot, the back of the couch.

The dinner party

I really have to go get ready for work but have been sucked into computer stuff. I started two new blogs, they aren't ready for release yet but stay tuned. One is my journals from Africa, I have hundreds of pages of writing from each day in Ghana and have been trying to decide what to do with them for ages, I even typed them all up a while ago when we lived in TN so I am making a blog with them. The second one will be for all the other stuff I think and write about everyday but don't feel fits in with the theme of this blog...I don't want to lose my readers.

This is a photo of a dinner party we had last week. Chris was really tired so it was pretty low key. From left to right Andrea, Maria, Andres, Chris, Kristinia and Mauricio. Mauricio and Kristina had never met our other friends and thought they might all get along. Mauricio is from Mexico and Kristina is from Canada. It was great, I was excited to use my table to full capacity but Tomas got sick (Andrea's husband) so we had one empty seat. Later that night Chris fell asleep and I went out to meet Hanne and Roque for a drink at a hotel down the road. It is called the underground and is modeled after a London tube station. Not really all that glamorous in my opinion but I guess absence makes the heart grow fonder. It was however nice to catch up with them and on the way out we saw a famous Pakistani cricket player coming in to the hotel. It was also notably freezing outside for Dubai that night. The sun is moody lately so the desert gets really chilly at night, not Boston or Chicago cold but cold for here.

My new boss

Preface: spell checker is not working!

This is Nadia and she is my boss every morning these days. I am teaching her a preschool curriuculm privately in her home because her mom is just about to give birth and they are only in Dubai until March. This amazing family lives 8 months of the year in Saudi Arabia and 2 months here in the summer and 2 months here in the winter to oversee their business here. Brazilian by birth and US raised the mom is fluent in Arabic, the dad is Lebanese Saudi and the nanny is from Eritrea. I am around to help with Nadia's English development. It is a lot of fun but I am glad we have a ways before having a three year old of our own, it is a busy age!

Burj Dubai

The tallest buidling in the world was barely visible through the stormy clouds today!
